Four blocks off of Main Street, Milt’s has been around since 1954, and there’s a reason it has outlasted so many of its diner compatriots over the years. It is really, really good. While you’ll still find the diner’s original 1950s Formica counter top and vinyl-top stools, its food as evolved with the times. Today, owners Nellie Balangee and BC Laprade serve grass-fed, hormone-free buffalo burgers. And the malts are made with milk from local Swiss brown cows that live on the McClish family dairy in the Spanish Valley near Moab.
Find a stool in the small interior or eat outside under the shade of a large Sycamore tree on the patio. A crowd favorite is the Chili Cheeseburger but the Western BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger is incredible. It’s a bacon cheeseburger with thick cut bacon, grilled onions, BBQ sauce, American cheese and lettuce.
It’s actually the oldest restaurant in Moab, first opened by Milt and Audrey Galbraith who moved to Moab in 1954 during the town’s legendary uranium boom. Among their clients were uranium miners and even some Hollywood actors like John Wayne and Robert Duvall. They operated Milt’s for 27 years and still dined there up until Milt’s passing in 2014. At the time of his passing, he and his wife had been married for 63.5 years.
